Effective Source Separation Workshop
Why Source Separation Matters?
In Malaysia, waste separation at source remains a critical yet underutilized strategy in sustainable waste management. Despite government efforts—such as the implementation of the Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Act 2007 (Act 672) and mandatory waste separation laws enforced in 2015—many households and businesses still struggle with inefficient waste disposal, leading to overflowing landfills and missed recycling opportunities.
By learning effective source separation, participants can directly contribute to reducing landfill dependency, improving recycling efficiency, and promoting a circular economy where waste materials are repurposed rather than discarded.
Key Learning Objectives
Understanding Waste Categories
- Gain insights into different types of waste, including organic waste, plastics, metals, glass, paper, and hazardous waste.
- Learn how improper disposal affects the environment and increases pollution.
Proper Disposal Management for Plastic & E-Waste
- Recognize the different grades of plastic and their recyclability.
- Learn how to manage electronic waste (e-waste) responsibly, preventing harmful toxins from contaminating the environment.
- Understand Malaysia’s e-waste collection initiatives, including drop-off points and recycling programs.
Zero Waste Implementation in Organizations
- Discover practical steps to integrate a Zero Waste culture in your workplace.
- Identify waste reduction techniques, from reducing single-use plastics to adopting sustainable procurement practices.
The Waste Challenge in Malaysia
Malaysia generates approximately 38,000 metric tonnes of waste daily, with only 17.5% being recycled—far below the global standard. Landfills continue to be the primary waste disposal method, with over 150 landfill sites across the country, many reaching capacity. Plastic pollution, in particular, has become a national crisis, with Malaysia ranking among the top plastic waste exporters and consumers.
A lack of proper waste separation at source exacerbates this issue, as valuable recyclable materials end up contaminated, rendering them unfit for processing. This event aims to address these inefficiencies by fostering a culture of conscious waste disposal and encouraging waste diversion from landfills.
