Reflecting on the Semiconductor Industry Study Tour – Insights and Outcomes

On Tuesday, 20th August 2024, QES, in collaboration with the Research for Social Advancement (REFSA), the Selangor Information Technology and Digital Economy Corporation (SIDEC), and supported by Invest Selangor, successfully hosted a Semiconductor Industry Study Tour in Selangor and Negeri Sembilan. This tour brought together 25-30 participants, including selected policymakers, government officials, think tanks, and representatives from multilateral institutions, to visit key industry players.

Led by Tan E Hun, Executive Director of REFSA, and Yong Kai Ping, CEO of SIDEC, the tour also featured the participation of YB Liew Chin Tong, Deputy Minister of Investment, Trade, and Industry, for part of the event. This initiative was part of REFSA’s ongoing semiconductor study tours, with the first tour held in May 2024 focusing on industry players in Penang and Kulim.

The study tour aimed to gain a comprehensive understanding of the semiconductor industry amidst current geo-economic developments, including the chip-making process and the roles of Selangor and Negeri Sembilan within Malaysia’s ecosystem. Additionally, the tour evaluated Malaysia’s competitive positioning within ASEAN and discussed national policies and incentives to enhance the industry’s capacity, particularly focusing on strengthening the local ecosystem for effective competition.

Furthermore, the tour facilitated engagement and dialogue with the private sector to explore strategies for Malaysia to advance up the value chain, improve downstream processes, and create high-quality, well-paid jobs for Malaysians.
